Time for some sleep facts!
1. Humans can survive longer than they can without food, than without sleep.
2. Sea otters hold hands when they sleep so they don't drift away from each other.
3. Humans are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep.
4. Being awake for 16 hours straight decreases your performance as much as if your blood alcohol level were .05% (the legal limit is .08%)
5. Any human being spends 1/3rd of their lifetime sleeping. So, if a person lives for 75 years, they spend almost 25 years sleeping.
6. At night if you fall asleep in 10-15 minutes after going to bed then you are not deprived of sleep but if you fall asleep in less than 5 minutes, then you are sleep deprived.
7. It is believed that sleep deprivation is one of the major contributing factors to some of world’s major disasters like Chernobyl, Exxon Valdez oil spill, Challenger Space Shuttle etc.
8. Our brain never rests when we sleep. In fact the brain maintains the vital functions of the body such as breathing. It also gets recharged while we sleep and our body rests.
9. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder.
10. 37 million Americans snore regularly.
